Leeuwkop Juvenile Centre

Initially, Leeuwkop was known as Rietfontein Farm number 15. It was on 29 August 1890 that President Paul Kruger awarded Leeuwkop to the then Department of Prisons and Reformatories. This department began developing the allocated area on 1 September 1915. Leeuwkop was declared a prison on 1 January 1924. The first prisoners were admitted on 14 March 1924. It was only during 1959 that Leeuwkop was declared a prison farm. It is 850 ha in size and vegetables, fruit and meat are produced here. The maximum prison became operational during 1961; Medium C became operational during 1973 and Medium B on 1 April 1984.
